Ed Smith Audiologist MA CCC-A – Retired

It’s official!  AudiEd_Smith_THUMBologist, mentor, colleague, friend and founding partner of Family Hearing Care, Ed Smith has retired.  Ed has been involved in hearing healthcare for more than 35 years. After graduating from Northern Michigan University in 1975 he went on to obtain a Master’s degree in Audiology from Western Michigan University in 1976. His career began in St. Paul, MN where he provided hearing services to children in the Intermediate School District.  After 3 years he returned to his roots in Traverse City where he spent the bulk of his career as Director of the Speech and Hearing Clinic at Munson Medical Center.  For 23 years he developed and grew the clinic to be the premier provider of audiology and speech services in Northern Michigan.  After joining the Traverse City Lions Club in the early 1980’s, he formed a partnership with the Lions of Michigan Service Foundation to bring mobile audiology services to Lions Club communities and outlying hospitals throughout Northern Michigan.  What started out as an outreach program with one mobile testing unit eventually grew to three Earlabs. His vision and desire to help children with hearing loss was recognized by industrialist and philanthropist William Carls.  A relationship between the two developed and led to building a larger clinic which became the William and Leni Carl’s Hearing Clinic. Services expanded with additional staff and Earlabs providing care to schools, industries, and communities.

Twenty-three years later, Ed left Munson and eventually took on the Directorship of the Constance Brown Hearing Clinic in Kalamazoo. After being there for 5 years it was time to return to Traverse City to start the final chapter of his career. In 2014 Ed, his wife and son, and audiologist, Dr. Paul Hanrahan and his wife, formed a partnership and opened Family Hearing Care. This private practice audiology and hearing aid clinic was welcomed by former patients and area referral sources. With Ed’s managerial and business skills the business was on solid ground after 2 years.  His career had come full circle and the time was right for spending more time with grandchildren and his two favorite hobbies of golfing and skiing.  With little fan fare, but high praise, Ed Smith has officially retired. It is with gratitude and great admiration that we wish him many future ski and golf outings with his family and friends.    – Thanks Ed !!!
